quiet neighborhood. a ten-car wreck in virginia. people ran out of their homes to this 'em. and a setback for a casino at national harbor. but we start with the heat. i'm doreen gentzler. >> and i'm jim handly in for jim vance. doug kammerer is out in the heat in the front lawn where it still feels like it's 90 degrees at 11:00, doug? >> this does not happen very often even in the summer months to get close to 100 and be over 90 at 11:00 with the heat index. look at the current conditions out there in the area. 86 degrees at the airport right now with winds out of the south 5 miles an hour. but that heat index at 91. temperatures around the rest of the region in the 70s right now. 7

in -- 73 in winchester. tomorrow it's about the heat. the heat advisory all across the area. the index could be between 100 and 105. some areas could be warmer than that. we'll talk about that coming up later on in my forecast and how long will this heat last? that too in my forecast. now we go to northwest where shomari stone at one of the pools staying open longer this week. >> reporter: it was sizzling so much today i was constantly washing my face with this wash cloth. this pool has been staying open throughout the week. a lot of kids were cooling off. but earlier we were in different neighborhoods. peep were without power. it has been restored but 450 people right now are still in the dark. >> awful. >> reporter: talk about a bad time not the have power. >> what was your reaction?

>> i said let me go outside. >> reporter: 4,000 homes lost power and air-conditioning on this scorching evening. temperatures approached a record 99 degrees today and of course it feels hotter with the humidity. too sizzling to braid hair inside. >> it is so hot. we need air. >> reporter: d.c.'s department of parks and rec is allowing folks to cool off in the heat this week. banker recreation center in northwest is a hot spot. >> come in and cool off. >> reporter: prince george's county opened six cooling centers. >> we have elderly and kids who come up here. >> reporter: metro ditched the no drinking policy. passengers can bring water on trains. doctors recommend if you are out on the basketball court make sure you drink plenty of water and electrolytes. elijah drinks gatorade.

he is the pitcher on the d.c. knights summer league team. >> blazing. >> reporter: indeed it is blazing. you can log on to www.nbcwashington.com and find the full list of cooling centers and pools that will stay open late this week. live here in northwest d.c. across the street from howard university i'm shomari stone, news4. a man apparently drowned in a backyard swimming pool in potomac. family members found him in the pool when they arrived at the home. paramedics rushed him to a hospital where he later died. the man was 75 years old but have not released his name. investigators say it appears to have been an accident. a bad accident in northern virginia. cars stacked on top of each other after a ten-car pileup on washington boulevard in ballston. police say a reckless driver started the crash and was

ticketed. one woman had to be taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening. washington boulevard was closed. but it is back open tonight. plans for an mgm casino at national harbor are on hold tonight. but the governor says he will push ahead. a work group failed to reach a consensus on how to extend gambling in the state. the governor could still call for a special session. mgm is committed as well saying, given the opportunity, mgm resorts would help maryland create thousands of jobs, help to diversify the economy and generate millions in new revenues. new developments in the wake of the treyvon martin shooting. the city of sanford florida fired the police chief tonight. lee's department came under fire for failing to immediately

arrest george zimmerman, the man who shot martin. lee stepped aside and tried to resign in april but the city commissioners rejected that move. the attorney general eric holder could be the first attorney general ever to be held in contempt a congress. a house committee voted to cite holder for contempt. republicans say he failed to turn over documents related to a gun running operation aimed at cracking down on mexican drug cartels. the full house could decide holder's fate as early as next week. guns drawn, officers taking cover, bullets flying. this cell phone shows a shootout in atlanta, maryland tonight. new tonight family members of the man killed by police have a lot of questions. jackie bensen reports. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the intensity of the

scene as metro transit police officers arrived to provide backup for their detective who had been fired on. it happened about 12:30 in the 7100 block of lori lane. after this red pickup truck rammed the detective's white unmarked police cruiser the gunfire began. the cruiser's windows were shot out. the windshield was riddled with bullet holes. >> the suspect opened fire on the officer. the officer returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: a spokesman said the detective came to the home to question a man that family members say was chester crestwell about a possible attempted abduction in the district on sunday. darrell says his brother, a father of two attended services at the canin baptist church that day and

received two service awards. >> we were at church and we was at church and he spoke and read the bible. and talked this morning about going fishing. very uncharacteristic my brother. i don't know what happen. they say the police came here and knocked on the door and they got in an argument. >> reporter: the investigation into the shooting is being handled by prince george's county police. jackie bensen, news4. mechanical problems forced the d.c. police helicopter to make an emergency landing in northwest this evening. it landed in a field on military road across from st. john's college high school. the chopper took off after crews checked it out. the two people on board were not injured. a judge found karen toles guilty in a reckless driving case that sparked public outrage. police say she almost caused an

accident on the beltway in february. a dash cam recorded her speeding at 100 miles an hour while weaving through traffic. later police added a reckless driving charge and that was today's conviction. >> we're pleased with the outcome today. we felt the reckless driving wharge was warranted based on council member toles' actions and the court held her accountable. >> she was fined $400 and is on probation before judgment. if she keeps a clean record for a year the conviction will be taken off her record. the interim president at the university of virginia wants to rebuild trust. carl zeithami defended his decision. he opposed the board of visitors call to recall sullivan and has no desire to apply for the

permanent post. >> didn't assume this role lightly. it was a difficult decision. but at the end of it i have to say i felt like i had no choice. >> reporter: the faculty senate continues their efforts to get sullivan reinstated. she signed a severance agreement on sunday. tomorrow the fought it of jerry sandusky could be in the jury's hands. the defense rested without calling the former penn state assistant coach. the number of accusations may be difficult to overcome. brian mooar has our report. >> reporter: on the final day of testimony at jerry sandusky's child sex abuse trial the defense decided not to put the former football coach on the stand. his defense let his supporters do the talking closing the case with character witnesses who talked about the jerry sandusky they knew. chad and david described a carry

father figure who changed their lives for the better. >> there are well-respected people in the community who stand by jerry. that's all they did. and i don't think that will overcome the testimony of the eight victims who came and testified. >> reporter: the defense struggled to blunt a prosecution case built around eight young accusers and mike mcqueary who testified he saw sandusky abusing a boy in a penn state shower. the defense tried to cast doubt on whether mcqueary saw or assumed he saw a crime. a family friend testified that mcqueary told him he heard what he described as sexual sounds. brian mooar, nbc news. there will be no hearing on the use of boundies in professional sports. dick durbin called off the hearing today. durbin called for the hearing after a league investigation revealed the new orleans saints

you are looking at surveillance video of a thief stealing a restaurant's used cooking oil at the red rooster last month. the thief drove up in a vacuum truck and took his time stealing the oil. the used oil is about $200 to him and possibly three times as much to their service provider who collects it. florida police are looking for a millionaire after they discovered a boat aground this morning. fort lauderdale officials found the boat with the engine running, its navigation lights on but no one aboard. an employee told the man's wife he went out on the boat tuesday

night. authorities find it strange someone would go out on the water in treacherous conditions. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this fire on san francisco's water front. it took 100 firefighters two hours to put out this blaze at pier 29. the area will host nexts year's america's cup yacht race. quite a scene for swimmers on the chesapeake bay today. a ship carried four chinese cranes under the bridge at 1:00 today. scientists made sure they could clear the span. they made it with just ten feet to spare. the bay bridge was shut down for 45 minutes so motorists weren't distracted by the cranes. a case to install signs outside the verizon center today. he said the plan to add nine new electronic billboards has taken into account concerns about

added noise and light pollution at gallery place and says the new signs will generate revenue for the verizon center. next council members will have to approve the bill to set the conditions for the signs. the impending shutdown of a good humor plant means a lot of ice cream cravings are going unfulfilled in this heat wave. the factory is closing next month and the parent company says that's contributed to a shortage of toasted almond bars. and other flavors in ice cream trucks in the east coast. good humor says the shortage should ease up by the end of july. tonight they are rosasted almon bars out there. >> that's not smart. they couldn't go out of business in december or close down in the middle of winter? >> seriously. >> come on guys. our high temperature, 98,

boston, 97, miami, florida. >> not to be confused with ballston. >> what do you think about miami? >> you read my tweet. 80 degrees. we were 98, boston was 97, miami only 80 degrees today. mother nature just turning the page on us as we made our way out an about today it was on the hot side and the heat will stick around through the day tomorrow and on friday too. there is the high temperature today. for the record we saw the high temperature of 98 degrees across the region. one degree shy of a record of 99. 12 degrees above average. 93 in martens burg, 98 in baltimore and 97 out in easton, culpepper, fredericksburg in the mid-90s today. still very hot in the cities but notice cooling off back to the west. winchester 73, but 84 in

hagerstown, 86 in washington and still 80 in baltimore and still at 11:00 have a heat index to talk about. 91 in washington, 86 in annapolis. 88 in hagerstown and 77 in fredericksburg. still hot and on the humid side. you feel the humidity. and that's why the heat advisory goes through the night tonight through the day tomorrow. through 10:00 tomorrow with the heat index tomorrow reaching 100 to 105. a lot more areas tomorrow will be around the 105 mark, maybe areas even higher than that all along the i-95 corridor and the metro locations. the records for the week, today 99, one degree shy of that today. tomorrow's record is 98 degrees and we are forecasting to at least tie the record if not break that record setback in 1988. friday's record, 101, i think that stays on the safe side as temperatures start to cool down a little bit during the day on friday. was there relief in the region?

94 in new york, 97 in philly, the only place to get relief is at the beaches, ocean city at 89. mild and muggy tomorrow morning. you will feel it. temperatures will rise very quickly tomorrow. near record heat and feeling more than 100 degrees plus with the actual temperature 93 to 99 degrees. this is the next couple days 98 tomorrow, 93 on friday. that will be a humid day. good chance of strong storms late in the day on friday. that will bring in nicer weather this weekend. looking less humid. highs in the upper 80s. next week we are miami like with a high of only 81 on tuesday. >> hold on to that thought. thanks, doug. you think you had a rough day, this leopard pulled himself to safety after falling into a water garden in india. workers notified a forest ranger
